La Palma Volcano Tour

Pick your walk
Which Walk to the New Volcano?
You cannot walk up to the Tajogaite volcano, the cone left by La Palma’s 2021 eruption, on your own: the Cabildo de La Palma says the trail to it must be walked with authorised guides. So the real choice is which guided walk. The one to book first is La Palma Outdoor’s La Palma: Tajogaite Volcano Guided Trek, from US$42 a person (checked November 2026): an 8 km loop up the new volcano and around its back edge, with a van to the start and back. It started at 9:00 AM on the dates we read, and on 10 March 2027 one adult alone could not book it: at least two participants were required that day.
If a loop that climbs the cone is not the walk you want, three other guided walks go to the same volcano:
Tajogaite Volcano: The Official Route with a Licensed Local Guide
La Palma Excursion's Official Route walk: about 7 km downhill from Llano del Jable to Las Manchas, crossing recent lava flows, with transport both ends. Guides in Spanish, English, French or Italian.
See the walk →Tajogaite Volcano, the essential route: 5 km short version
La Palma Natural's 5 km loop from Llano del Jable, about 3 hours, with poles and raincoats lent. It started at 3:00 PM on the dates we read.
See the walk →La Palma: Tour to the new Tajogaite volcano 360º.
La Palma Transfer & Tours: a 6.6 km one-way walk from Llano del Jable to Las Manchas, 630 m down, with hotel transfers in the product. The first date on sale was 16 January 2027, and the three dates we read offered a start by car from the El Paso Visitor Center. Not for children under 10.
See the walk →Prices, ratings and review counts from the listings (GetYourGuide checked November 2026). Operators price by date and season, so treat the figures as the shape of the market, not a quote.
The Gobierno de Canarias keeps La Palma’s volcanic traffic light at yellow, “alert”, because of carbon dioxide emissions, unstable ground on the lava flows and high ground temperatures (Infovolcán La Palma, read 8 November 2026). On 30 October 2026 the Cabildo redrew the exclusion zone around the 2021 lava flows by decree 2026/11663. Check both before you go.

The Tajogaite volcano on La Palma
The Volcano, the Walks and What You Pay
Where the volcano is, why every walk to it is guided, what the 8 km loop involves, the other routes, and the lava tube and boats for a second day.
Where the volcano is

The Tajogaite volcano is on the west side of La Palma, in the municipality of El Paso. IGN, Spain’s national geographic institute, dates the eruption from 14:10 UTC on 19 September 2021 to 13 December 2021: 85 days and 8 hours. When it was declared over, the Gobierno de Canarias gave the new cone’s top as 1,131 m and the lava flows as 1,219 hectares, reaching the sea. “Volcán de Tajogaite” became the official name by a vote of the Cabildo in February 2024.
Several walks start at Llano del Jable, at about 1,200 m, east of the cone. It is 24.0 km by road from the centre of Santa Cruz de La Palma, the island’s capital and ferry port, and 9.9 km by road from El Paso. Is the La Palma volcano active? has what the authorities publish about it.
Can you go without a guide?
No. The Cabildo’s tourism site describes the trail to the new volcano as a circular walk of about 6 km “which must be undertaken with authorised guides”; its route card says a permit is required and that the walk is booked only through an authorised company (visitlapalma.es, read November 2026). The tours on this page are those companies’ walks, each with its own route.
Without a booking you can still see the lava. The Cabildo’s travel guide names the Mirador del Time, the Plaza de Tajuya, the Monumento a la Virgen de Fátima and the Puerto de Tazacorte as places to see the lava flows and the new land they built at the coast. Can you visit the Tajogaite volcano? goes through the rule and the viewpoints.
La Palma Outdoor’s 8 km loop
The trek is 4 hours in all. A van takes about 15 minutes from the meeting point to the start, and the walk itself takes about 3 hours 45 minutes. It begins at Tacande, the first volcano on record here, which erupted in 1480 and is known as the burnt mountain. From there the path climbs the new volcano and goes around its back edge: 8 km on a comfortable path, 300 m down and 300 m up. You do not climb onto the crater. On the way the guide covers how the lava destroyed buildings and forest and made new land at the coast.
The price covers the guide and the van to the start and back from the meeting point. Hotel pickup and tips are not included. Bring comfortable shoes, warm clothing and a jacket, a hat, sunscreen and water. Spanish and English tours run every day and German ones on some days; on the dates we read, the booking page offered the tour in English and Spanish.
The other walks to the cone
La Palma Excursion's Tajogaite Volcano: The Official Route with a Licensed Local Guide is from US$41 (checked November 2026). It drives through the lava flows to Llano del Jable, then walks about 7 km downhill, 600 m of descent, skirting the cone and crossing recent lava flows to Las Manchas, one of the districts the eruption hit hardest. It started at 9:00 AM on the dates we read and could be booked by one adult on all three. “Official Route” is its own title: the Cabildo’s trail is a 6 km circle. The route comparison sets the two side by side.
La Palma Natural's 5 km short version, from US$39, is a loop from Llano del Jable on ash and lapilli, 3 hours in all, and it lends trekking poles and raincoats. La Palma Transfer & Tours' 360º walk, from US$45, includes transfers to and from your hotel and covers 6.6 km one way from Llano del Jable to Las Manchas; on the three dates we read (16 January, 16 February and 10 March 2027) the booking page offered only a start by car from the El Paso Visitor Center. The same company’s 8-hour day, from US$54, adds a bus tour to the lava delta at Puerto de Tazacorte and the Plaza de Tajuya. La Palma Outdoor also runs an 8 km loop at sunset from Llano del Jable, from US$42, with 15 reviews so far (checked November 2026). The 360º walk had no dates on sale before 16 January 2027 and the 8-hour day none before 3 March 2027. One adult could not book the sunset loop on 27 November 2026, which needed at least two participants; two adults could on 20 January 2027, at 3:30 PM.
The lava tube and the coast
The Cueva de Las Palomas is a lava tube at Las Manchas, but it is older than the new volcano: the Cabildo dates the tubes there to the eruption of the San Juan volcano in 1949. You can only go in on a guided visit with an authorised company. La Palma Outdoor's visit is from US$28 each for at least two people; one adult alone could not book it on the dates we read. La Palma Natural's, also from US$28, took one adult at 10:00 AM on 20 January and 10 March 2027 (checked November 2026). The lava tube compares them.
The Cabildo also points to boat trips from the port of Tazacorte to see the new lava deltas from the sea. FANCY's catamaran trip (from US$68) and Nemo La Palma's small boat (from US$50, at most 11 passengers) both go to the lava delta (checked November 2026). One adult could not book Nemo La Palma’s trip on 27 November 2026, which needed at least two participants; two adults could on 20 January 2027, at 11:30 AM.
What reviewers mention
La Palma Outdoor’s trek has 2,290 reviews on GetYourGuide. We read the 350 newest, the oldest dated 25 April 2026 and the newest 8 November 2026: 9 give three stars or fewer, and 4 of those have text. One (9 June) found 8 km a bit long for scenery that changes little. One (19 June) says the volcano was against the light in the late afternoon, so no photos. One (28 August) had cloud at the top and saw nothing of the craters. One (13 September) says the guide mixed Spanish and English and the explanations did not always match. Many of the written reviews praise the guide; a few mention guides who lived through the eruption themselves.

La Palma Volcano Tour: Questions
Which walk, whether you need a guide, how long and how hard, how close you get, the volcano's status, the lava tube and getting there from Tenerife.
For most people, La Palma Outdoor's La Palma: Tajogaite Volcano Guided Trek, from US$42 a person (checked November 2026): an 8 km loop up the new volcano and around its back edge, with a van to the start and back. On 10 March 2027 one adult alone could not book it: at least two participants were required. For a walk that is nearly all downhill, La Palma Excursion's Official Route walk is from US$41; for a shorter afternoon loop, La Palma Natural's 5 km short version is from US$39 (checked November 2026).
No. The Cabildo de La Palma's tourism site says the trail to the new volcano 'must be undertaken with authorised guides'; its route card says a permit is required and the walk is booked only through an authorised company (read November 2026). Without a booking, the Cabildo's travel guide names the Mirador del Time, the Plaza de Tajuya, the Monumento a la Virgen de Fátima and the Puerto de Tazacorte as places to see the lava flows. See can you visit the Tajogaite volcano.
It depends on the walk. The Cabildo describes its guided trail as a circle of about 6 km. The tours give their own routes: 8 km and 4 hours on La Palma Outdoor's loop, about 7 km downhill on La Palma Excursion's, 6.6 km one way on La Palma Transfer & Tours' and 5 km on La Palma Natural's short version. See the route comparison.
Moderate on the main loop. La Palma Outdoor's trek is 8 km with 300 m down and 300 m up on volcanic ash, and is not suitable for people with mobility impairments or pre-existing medical conditions. La Palma Excursion's walk is medium difficulty and nearly all downhill, 600 m of descent; in summer the heat can make it much harder.
Figures differ from tour to tour and do not agree, so we print none. On La Palma Outdoor's trek you walk around the back edge of the new volcano and do not climb onto the crater. Whether you see into the craters on the day also depends on cloud: one of the trek's reviewers (28 August 2026) saw nothing of them from the top.
The eruption ended on 13 December 2021 (IGN), and we do not forecast what the volcano will do. The Gobierno de Canarias keeps the volcanic traffic light at yellow, 'alert', because of carbon dioxide emissions, unstable ground on the lava flows and high ground temperatures (Infovolcán La Palma, read 8 November 2026). See is the La Palma volcano active.
The Cabildo de La Palma redrew the exclusion zone around the 2021 lava flows by decree 2026/11663 of 30 October 2026. The press (AtlánticoHoy, 7 November 2026) reported its publication in the provincial bulletin on 6 November, regulated access to parts of El Paso, Los Llanos de Aridane and Tazacorte, and a wide strip around the lava flows still closed. We found nothing saying how it affects the guided walks; check with your operator.
No. The Cabildo dates the lava tubes at Las Manchas to the eruption of the San Juan volcano in 1949. Entry is by guided visit with an authorised company only. La Palma Outdoor's visit is from US$28 each for at least two people (checked November 2026); one adult alone could not book it on the dates we read. See the lava tube.
You can, but it is a long day. Fred. Olsen's fast ferry from Los Cristianos to Santa Cruz de La Palma takes about 2 hours 30 minutes each way, and the walks start on the other side of the island, 24.0 km by road from Santa Cruz de La Palma to Llano del Jable. See La Palma volcano from Tenerife.
Closed walking shoes, water, a hat, sunscreen and a warm layer or jacket. That is the list on La Palma Outdoor's trek. La Palma Excursion does not allow sandals or flip-flops, and La Palma Outdoor's sunset walk asks for at least a litre of water and a windproof jacket.
