The Best Time to Walk to the Tajogaite Volcano

When to walk to the Tajogaite volcano: morning, afternoon or sunset starts, what cloud and backlight do to the view, summer heat, and dates on sale through the winter.

Updated November 2026

The guided walks to the Tajogaite volcano run through the year: La Palma Outdoor’s La Palma: Tajogaite Volcano Guided Trek had dates on sale on 27 November 2026, 20 January and 10 March 2027, from US$42 a person each time (checked November 2026). What makes the difference is the hour and the cloud. Its 9:00 AM start avoids the late-afternoon light that one reviewer found left the volcano against the sun, and cloud at the top is the one thing no date can rule out.

Powerd by GetYourGuide

The calendar shows the start times for the date you pick. You can reserve now, pay later and cancel free until 24 hours before, which helps if the forecast turns.

The Gobierno de Canarias keeps La Palma’s volcanic traffic light at yellow, “alert” (Infovolcán La Palma, read 8 November 2026), and the Cabildo redrew the exclusion zone around the lava flows on 30 October 2026 (decree 2026/11663). Check both before you go.

Light matters for photographs. A three-star review of La Palma Outdoor’s trek (19 June 2026) says the time was badly chosen, because in the late afternoon the volcano is against the light and photographs did not work. On the morning start that hour is behind you.

The sunset walk is the other way round: it is built around the evening light, from the viewpoints opposite the craters. Temperatures drop sharply at sunset there and it is usually windy, so it asks for a windproof jacket and at least a litre of water. It has 15 reviews so far.

Cloud and rain

Illustration. Cloud spilling over La Palma’s mountains: the one thing no booking date can rule out.

Cloud is the risk you cannot book around. A three-star review of 28 August 2026 had a kind guide and a good walk, but cloud at the highest point, and saw nothing of the craters. A five-star review of La Palma Excursion’s walk (22 October 2026) praises a guide who kept explaining with the rain pouring down.

Bad weather can also stop a walk. La Palma Excursion’s walk is “subject to favorable weather conditions and possible access restrictions imposed by the authorities”, with another date or a refund if it is cancelled. The Cabildo cancels visits to the Cueva de Las Palomas lava tube without notice when there is an adverse weather alert.

We do not print a forecast or a climate table: no issuer we read publishes one for the cone.

Heat

The walks cross volcanic ash and lapilli. In summer the heat can make La Palma Excursion’s walk significantly harder, and a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and enough water are on its list. Because it is almost all downhill, it is sold as the walk for the hot months. La Palma Natural’s short loop asks for at least 500 ml of water, and a litre in summer.

Booking for a month

The from-price of La Palma Outdoor’s trek did not change with the date on the three days we read, and two adults paid twice the one-adult price. On 10 March 2027, though, one adult alone could not book: at least two participants were required that day, while on 27 November and 20 January one adult could. If you travel alone, check your date on the calendar before you plan around it.
