Can You Visit the Tajogaite Volcano?

Yes, on a guided walk only: the Cabildo de La Palma's rule, the tours that run the walk, where to see the lava without booking, and the October 2026 exclusion-zone decree.

Updated November 2026

Yes, but only on a guided walk. The Cabildo de La Palma’s tourism site says the trail to the new volcano “must be undertaken with authorised guides”, and its route card adds that a permit is required and that the walk is booked only through an authorised company (read November 2026). There is no way up on your own. The walk to book is La Palma Outdoor’s La Palma: Tajogaite Volcano Guided Trek, from US$42 a person (checked November 2026): an 8 km loop around the new volcano, with a van to the start and back.

Powerd by GetYourGuide

The calendar shows the dates and start times on sale. On 10 March 2027 one adult alone could not book: at least two participants were required that day. You can reserve now, pay later and cancel free until 24 hours before.

The Gobierno de Canarias keeps La Palma’s volcanic traffic light at yellow, “alert” (Infovolcán La Palma, read 8 November 2026), and on 30 October 2026 the Cabildo redrew the exclusion zone around the 2021 lava flows by decree 2026/11663. Both are explained below.

What the Cabildo says

The Cabildo de La Palma, the island’s government, runs the tourism site visitlapalma.es. Its page on the trail through the new volcano describes “a hike of around 6 kilometres lasting a little over 2 hours which must be undertaken with authorised guides”. The Spanish version says the same, “debe ser realizada con guías autorizados”, and asks you to book in advance with the island’s companies that run this kind of activity. The route card beside it reads: about 3 hours, 6 km, circular, low difficulty, El Paso, permit required, booking only with an authorised company.

The page names no price, no start point and no company. The companies set those, and each walks its own route, so the tours below differ in length and start. The route comparison puts the Cabildo’s trail beside them.

Why companies at all? When the Cabildo restarted free visits for island residents in August 2022, it said the authorised active-leisure companies gave residents places on their walks in return for the private tourist use of the new volcano. That scheme was announced then; we have not found a newer one.

The tours that run the walk

From-prices a person (checked November 2026). La Palma Outdoor’s trek needed at least two participants on 10 March 2027, and so did its sunset loop on 27 November 2026. La Palma Transfer & Tours’ 360º walk had no dates on sale before 16 January 2027 (the three dates we read offered a start by car from the El Paso Visitor Center) and its 8-hour day none before 3 March 2027.

All of them are guided: La Palma Transfer & Tours walks “always accompanied by” licensed or authorised guides, La Palma Excursion with a certified local guide, and La Palma Natural with guides qualified by the Government of the Canary Islands. La Palma Natural also includes access to the exclusion zone of the eruption among the things you pay for.

Seeing the lava without a guide

You can see the lava fields without a booking. The Cabildo’s travel guide names four places to see the lava flows and the new land the lava built at the coast: the Mirador del Time, the Plaza de Tajuya, the Monumento a la Virgen de Fátima and the Puerto de Tazacorte. The same guide says the new volcano itself is visited on guided routes. The Cabildo’s trail page also suggests boat trips from the port of Tazacorte to see the new lava deltas from the sea.

The status, dated

  • Traffic light: yellow. The Gobierno de Canarias keeps the volcanic traffic light for La Palma at yellow, “alert”, because of carbon dioxide emissions, unstable ground on parts of the lava flows and high ground temperatures (Infovolcán La Palma, read 8 November 2026; the page itself is undated). IGN dates the move from red to yellow to an order of 31 January 2022.
  • Exclusion zone: redrawn on 30 October 2026. The Cabildo’s decree 2026/11663 redraws the area closed after the eruption, with its polygons on the Cabildo’s open-data portal. The press (AtlánticoHoy, 7 November 2026) reported its publication in the provincial bulletin on 6 November, regulated access to parts of El Paso, Los Llanos de Aridane and Tazacorte, and a wide strip around the lava flows still closed.

We found nothing saying how the new zone affects the guided walks, and a search of Spanish and English news covering the twelve months before 8 November 2026 found no suspension of the visits to the cone. The walks can still be called off on the day: La Palma Excursion’s walk is “subject to favorable weather conditions and possible access restrictions imposed by the authorities”, with another date or a refund if it is cancelled. Check the two pages above before you go, and is the La Palma volcano active? for what the authorities publish about the volcano itself.

The same question on Lanzarote

The same question comes up at Timanfaya on Lanzarote, and the answer there is different again: lanzarote-volcano-tour.com explains that you can drive to the visitor site at Timanfaya but ride the park’s own coach on the volcano route.
